Garden Happenings

I have no clue what I am doing in my garden and it shows. We enjoy watching it though. So far every tomato we pick goes straight into JC's mouth. Corn is still growing. The beans..well I have no idea what kind they are anymore and don't know when to pick them or if I have to shell them or not. I have like 3 varieties out there. I goofed with that one. Next year I should just grow tomatoes and one type of bean and call it a day! My bell peppers and okra just seem sort of stagnant. I attempted square foot gardening, but I really didn't read the book. Perhaps next year I will read the books and yield better results. It's obvious everything is cramping each other. Well, believe it or not this is an improvement over last year's garden though, so I'll count myself lucky that slowly but surely I learn from mistakes. I could totally study up and fix these issues I know, but what fun is that?

Jumper Crop

And we wander why our kids feel the need to jump off or over everything in sight. Well it's gotta be cuz this guy does it.

Also note our garden improvements. Hubby and Poppy added a fence for me to keep out bunnies. I plan to add a net over as well to keep out birds. Yup Fort Knox Garden here I come! Thanks guys for helping me achieve my fence dreams!

The seeds are planted and we'll see what happens. It's my first garden from majority seed! I have spinach, bush beans, lima beans, corn, and okra. My basil and tomato are from plants.

Blackberries are Here!!

We are definitely making a tradition of berry picking. The girls seem to enjoy it. We go to Martin's Berry Patch in Hallsville where we pick blueberries and blackberries. This year the blueberries seemed not quite ready though so we hung out mostly in the blackberries.

Ahhh yes, the bee shot!

I have a similar shot of JC from last year and I believe she is wearing the same pants! The girl is getting taller, but not fatter, so clothes are lasting us!

The berries were yummy and some are frozen now, but we did make a couple of cobblers and they were tasty!

Vegetation

Our cactus in our front flower bed! Love those flowers! I don't remember them blooming last year, but we also pruned it this year.

And of course the garden update. Cheery tomatoes and bell peppers! So excited!

Gardening 101

Step 1: Dig a hole and border it. Mix dirt with cow manure and peat moss. The kids thought it was absolutely hilarious that cow manure is cow poop and proceeded to strip down and spread it all over themselves. Oh the pictures....

Step 2: Decide where all the plants should go! Be sure to plant flowers in the VEGETABLE garden for flower-loving girls!

Step 3: Plant, water and watch them grow!

Well I have planted my first garden! I am beyond excited. Pre-children I never did more than an herb garden in my flower beds so having a real 5'x5' garden with flowers, vegetables and herbs is making my happy meter go way up! I am loving this activity with the kids. Whenever I say "Lets go outside to work on the garden," I get an immediate "YAY" response! The kids would much rather pick everything OUT of the garden, so they haven't exactly been helpful, but it's still fun. We've even gone out and "plowed" in the rain. The girls ran for cover in the play house and watched me from a distance. :-) I loved getting all muddy with them and then finally going inside for baths! Actually I can't remember ANY day of gardening that hasn't been followed by a bath!!!
